Painted Dog Press is a curated press. We believe publishing can be an art form, much like the work of writer, critic, and publisher Roberto Calasso’s Adelphi Edizioni. Our focus is on the singular voice of the author and the distinct, artful brushstroke, not the patchwork of trends. Our marketing informs readers honestly and adds value—it does not overhype. We believe publishing decisions should be made by knowledgeable editors and their trusted advisers, not just by budget spreadsheets. We oppose brief marketing cycles, the view that a book is merely a commodity for short-term financial gain, and publishing titles for the algorithm.

A painted dog can be many things—from the African wild dog (Lycaon pictus, “pictus” being the Latin for “painted”) to a Dalmatian rendered in the dotty style of Yayoi Kusama. We work with writers of fine literary fiction as well as writers of the highest quality of genre writing.
